Bryant-Lake Bowl: An Institution with Balls

Presents Prof. Damon Rudman speaking on

The Problem of the Body:

Why is our society ashamed of bodily urges?

7PM, Sunday, January 24 & Thursday, January 28

Abstract: Contemporary American attitudes toward bodily urges will be deconstructed by juxtaposing material from recent media with jaw-dropping imagery and facts from cultures of other times and places. Then, the origins and development of our mores and attitudes will be traced. And, there will be lots of naughty pictures and some fart noises.

Part I:    Deconstructing the Problem

I.1   Are We Too Open About Sex?
I.2   Sex, Violence, and Our Laws
I.3   Urges of Lesser Allure: Elimination
I.4   Deadly Sins?— Sloth and Gluttony

Part II: The Genealogy of the Problem
II.1     Ancient Origins: Girding loins to get ahead
II.2     The Early Church: Got sins? We can help!
II.3     The Early Middle Ages: Church? What Church? Let’s party!
II.4     Late Middle Ages through 19th Century:  Money changes everything
II.5     20th Century: Guilty pleasures comodified

Advisory: Mature (and much immature) content.
“Rudman’s findings are uplifting, penetrating, and not as messy as you might think!” —Patrick Scully, impresario of Patrick’s Cabaret
